If you are lucky enough to study in this fine city, then you are in for a real treat when it comes to dining out. Whether you are looking for a spot of brunch to set you up for an afternoon of study or revision, a late-night bite after a night out, or you fancy some gastropub fare, Exeter has it all. It is highly recommended to walk around its picturesque streets!
Plenty To Enjoy
There is plenty to enjoy in Exeter when looking for food, from a visit to The Glorious Art House on Fore Street for one of their celebrated hot chocolates or cakes, to a big, elegant breakfast at Tea on the Green with the perfect view of Exeter Cathedral as your backdrop. In the evening, there are some sumptuous offerings around the city and close to your student room, with plenty of top-notch gastropub options, as well as some amazing experiences — such as The Old Firehouse, with its choice of ciders and massive pizzas to share with friends. There are few places to spend as enjoyable a few hours as here with your new friends from university.
Exeter has been consistently ranked as one of the best places in the country to eat out. As well as the above, you have the choice of several top-class places and international cuisine to whet the appetite, whilst Princesshay offers the choice of big brand, chain companies that we all know and love. There is also a big independent scene throughout the city.
World Cuisine
There is food for every type of taste bud, and as a student living in our student accommodation in Exeter, you will be within walking distance of most cuisines you search for. Not only do you have access to some student-friendly deals in Exeter, but there are also regular markets and food halls to take advantage of. Exeter Farmers Market is one such example, with seasonal local food and drink sold every Thursday. The Guildhall Street Food Market operates seven days a week from 11am to 4pm, with a wide variety of food, colour, and culture on offer throughout the week. The Quayside is a glorious setting for many restaurants in the city, and regularly hosts the Exeter Street Food Night Market, with food stalls and produce sold against a stunning backdrop at night.
Exeter Night Out
We all know that nightlife is important as a student, and here there is still plenty on offer to you if you choose to live and study in the city and any of our student properties. Your new home will be situated just a short walk away from the Students’ Guild, the Lemon Grove (the Lemmy as it is affectionately known by students here), and a whole host of pubs and club nights.
Legendary Student Nights
The most famous nightspot of the lot is Timepiece on Little Castle Street, with its multi-storey layout, beer garden, and eclectic mix of music from indie and chart to Latin nights. It has legendary status among Exeter students and is a particular favourite after Wednesday BUCS sports nights, when the atmosphere hits another level entirely.
If you prefer an indie or alternative night, Cavern is the place to go — it has been around since 1991 and has a proper underground feel, with live bands and a loyal crowd of alternative music fans. For a cheesy student night, Unit 1 off Sidwell Street is hard to beat, with Cheesy Tuesdays and Quids In Thursdays consistently popular. Other places with popular student nights include Rosie’s and The Lemmy, whilst for dance music, Move near the Quay offers a proper underground club experience.
Traditional Pubs
Some nights, a pub crawl will suffice instead of a big night on the town, and Exeter can certainly cater for your needs. There are some proper historic bars in the city to get to, with The Ship Inn one of the most famous — it was here that Sir Francis Drake used to drink, after all! The Fat Pig and The Hourglass are just two of the fine gastro bars to enjoy great ale and great food, with several other lively bars around Fore Street to crawl through.
Student-friendly places such as the Victoria Inn, The Firehouse, and The Imperial are firm favourites, and during the summer months, Double Locks is a beautiful pub along the canal to visit, as is Turf Locks with its views across the Exe. For a different type of pub crawl just out of the city, Topsham is a treasure near its picturesque quay.
Live Music Venues
There are several good live music venues in the city, including the Lemmy. The Great Hall is the largest to be found in the region and is host to touring rock bands, as well as regularly hosting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The Phoenix is an arts centre and a cultural hub within the creative scene in Exeter. It hosts all sorts of music genres throughout the year, from indie rock to jazz, folk, blues, and dance music.
British Universities and Colleges Sports
Sport is such a big part of the student experience for many people, and at Exeter University, you have a wealth of options open to you. Whether you are looking to have some fun, make new friends, stay fit, or compete at a high level, you can find the right type of club or sporting endeavour to suit your level and choice.
Although some of our properties offer fantastic gym spaces, the facilities at the University of Exeter are well regarded as among the best in the UK. The university currently sits 4th in the BUCS rankings and is consistently one of the top performers in student sport nationally. Students can take advantage of a large fitness centre on the Streatham Campus, with a 200-station gym, indoor and outdoor pitches, squash courts, a cricket centre, sports halls, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fleet of boats at Roadford RYA Sailing Centre, and a boathouse on the canal.
High Performance Programme
There are so many sports clubs and societies to enjoy at the University of Exeter, but away from that, there is plenty of choice if you are looking to stay fit on an individual basis.
Personal training and fitness classes provide you with a wide choice of sporting activities to have fun and stay fit, from body combat and spinning to yoga and Pilates. A High Performance Programme also provides the very best sports students with the chance to receive top-class coaching, sports science, physiotherapy, and strength and conditioning training.
Rugby Union
Rugby Union is big business in this part of the world, and the Exeter Chiefs, founded in 1871, play in the Gallagher Premiership — the top tier of English rugby. The club has become one of the leading clubs in the Premiership, winning the championship title in 2016-17 and 2019-20, and lifting the European Rugby Champions Cup in 2020. Their home at Sandy Park was one of thirteen venues that hosted matches during the 2015 Rugby World Cup. If football is more your thing, Exeter City play in the football league and have hosted some pretty big names in football in recent years in the FA Cup at St James Park.
Historic Sports Events
Competitive horse racing has a regular place on the calendar at Exeter Racecourse to the south of the city, whilst watersports are a massive part of competitive sport in Exeter, and the Quayside is a historic setting. Each year there is the exciting Exeter Regatta and Dragonboat Racing.
The Great West Run and several other charity marathons and 10k events can be found taking place throughout the year if you are a dedicated runner.
Shopping For Every Need
As a student living in our student accommodation in Exeter, you will never have a problem finding the right type of shopping for your needs. It is one of the most popular parts of the region for shopping, culture, and leisure activities, so there is always something going on.
It is a city that is home to plenty of high street brands, exquisite shopping centres, and independent stores in a gorgeous architectural setting. Princesshay is an award-winning shopping centre at the heart of Exeter city centre. It is home to a large selection of cafes, restaurants and brand-name shops, and is easily reached on foot.
The Cathedral Quarter
All the public spaces and shopping areas within the city centre are easily reached on foot, with the Cathedral Quarter home to a large selection of independent shops and boutiques set around the magnificent cathedral itself and its spacious Cathedral Green. Exeter Cathedral is packed full of 900 years of history and is one of the great cathedrals of England, featuring the longest unbroken stretch of Gothic vaulting in the world. The city centre is largely traffic-free, which makes it a great shopping option for many people. Close to the Cathedral Quarter and Princesshay is the High Street, home to all the big-name brands you know and love. For more familiar names, The Guildhall and Harlequins are undercover shopping centres with a mixture of high street names and small independent businesses.
Gandy Street
For trendy clothing stores, charity shops, gift stores and boutiques, Gandy Street is a great place for students to have a browse and discover hidden gems. It is also right in the heart of the city centre, just a short walk from Cavern and a cluster of brilliant pubs and bars, so you can come and shop in the afternoon, grab some food, and end the night out with friends.
Spoilt For Choice
As well as being home to a cracking pub crawl route, Fore Street is full of artsy, independent shops, within meandering arcades and old architectural marvels, with the street leading downhill towards the riverfront. If you are looking for arts and crafts supplies and antiques, the Quayside area has it all, as well as pretty cafes to have a brief rest from the shopping.
Something For Everybody
Exeter is such an active city, and throughout your time living at our student accommodation in Exeter, you will be living in the heart of a sporting city, a cultural city, a city that loves art, music and comedy. There really is something for everybody to enjoy.
The Exeter Festival
The Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink is a popular highlight on the food scene, taking place in May each year at Exeter Castle and the surrounding grounds. Throughout the year, you can find plenty of regular food markets and events to try out some of the amazing restaurants and street food on offer, as well as some of the brilliant local produce from Devon as a whole.
There is so much wide open space and green areas in the lovely fresh air of Devon that it is no surprise that there are plenty of sporting events and activities on offer in Exeter. There are regular parkruns, 5k and 10k events, cycling events, as well as the option of hikes in the sprawling Dartmoor National Park outside of the city, and the watersports regatta in the city itself.
Art and Music
The arts scene is a vibrant one, with theatre, comedy, live music, and dance events littered throughout the year in the city. The Great Hall and Exeter Cathedral are both stunning settings for live concerts, with Cavern and the Lemmy providing smaller venues for live music. Westpoint Exeter and Powderham Castle regularly host large festivals — including the annual retro 80s festival Let’s Rock Exeter at Powderham, and a growing programme of headline concerts at the castle throughout the summer.
Every year, the Heritage Open Days event sees many buildings of historical significance open their doors for free to the public, including areas and buildings not usually accessible at all. It is a great way to see more of this fantastic city. For art, theatre, and comedy, the Exeter Corn Exchange, Barnfield Theatre, and the Cygnet Theatre provide all sorts of concerts and events throughout the year.
Students commonly live in Pennsylvania and St James near the main Streatham Campus, as well as Heavitree and the city centre. These areas are popular for their bus links, local shops, and walkable routes to lectures.
Exeter is hilly, especially around Streatham Campus, so many students factor gradients into where they live. Walking routes and cycle paths are often chosen with this in mind.
Some do. While Streatham Campus is the main hub, students attending St Luke’s Campus often plan accommodation around their commute.
