Let’s Go Ho Ho!

Where are the Best Christmas Markets in the UK?
There are so many to choose from, but we’ve had to narrow it down to six of our favourites. So, here are the best UK Christmas markets you need to visit this year. Whether you’re hunting for gifts or just want a warming walk through the city, these markets are the true all-rounders.
1. Edinburgh Christmas Market
Dates: 16 November 2025 – 4 January 2026
Location: East Princes Street Gardens
There are a few more scenic Christmas markets anywhere in the world. The stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle and rows of alpine inspired stalls make this one of the top choices for festive fanatics. The panoramic views from the big wheel by night are breathtaking, and the ice skating rink makes for a challenging evening activity.
2. Manchester Christmas Markets
Dates: 8 November – 22 December 2025
Location: Spread across Albert Square, St Ann’s Square, Exchange Square, and more
Arguably the biggest Christmas celebration in the country, Manchester’s markets are returning to Albert Square following a few years away. This means the main market hub is back, and it’s not to be missed! The sheer number of stalls can be overwhelming at first, but once you’re immersed in the festivities, you’ll have a great day.
For a break from the crowds, consider a trip to the Northern Quarter for a lesson in creativity and quirkiness.
3. Bath Christmas Market
Dates: 27 November – 15 December 2025
Location: Around Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths
Another visually pleasing setting for a Christmas market, the Bath version takes place in a UNESCO World Heritage city. For fans of Bridgerton and other period dramas, this can feel like stepping into your favourite stories. Expect handcrafted gifts, traditional carol performances, and illuminated Georgian architecture.

4. Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market
Dates: 2 November – 23 December 2025
Location: Victoria Square and New Street
Returning to the streets of Birmingham for another year, the city’s partnership with the German city of Frankfurt has elevated the authenticity of its markets. Here, you’ll be able to indulge in the very best bratwurst and pretzels while bobbing along to the tunes of the oompah bands. The local treat of Frankfurt, Schokokuss (chocolatey marshmallow bites), is a particular favourite.
5. London Winter Wonderland (Hyde Park)
Dates: 21 November 2025 – 5 January 2026
Location: Hyde Park
It’s mad, it’s busy, but it’s a place you’ve got to hit up if you’re a student in London. This is more of a theme park than a Christmas market. It has rides, circus shows, and an ice kingdom made of snow and huge ice sculptures. It’s a full day out that stays open well into the night.
Make sure to book your tickets in advance, though, as unlike many of the other markets on this list, it isn’t free to visit.
6. York Christmas Market (St. Nicholas Fair)
Dates: 13 November – 22 December 2025
Location: Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square
York is always a beautiful place to walk around, but at Christmas it goes up another level. The timber framed shops, traditional stores, and scents that rise from the eclectic range of food vendors make it a site of seasonal splendour.
The wonder of York’s markets lies in their proximity to The Shambles, York’s most historic street. It all just comes together for a Christmas experience like no other.
When do UK Christmas Markets Start in 2025?
Most of the biggest markets kick off in early to mid November, with the earliest jumping the gun as soon as spooky season comes to an end. London and Manchester are usually among the earliest openers, while York and Bath hold off a little longer.
Student Picks and Inside Tips
Here are some of our favourite student comments we’ve come across while we’ve been writing this guide:
- “Manchester is unbeatable for its size and variety. The hot Vimto is a new favourite of mine, it’s weird but it works”.
- “The setting of Edinburgh is the best, it looks like stepping foot in Hogwarts at Christmas”.
- “York has the magic other cities don’t, especially if it’s a crisp night. It’s the place to go for proper nostalgia”.
If you’re planning on travelling to any of the markets we’ve looked at today, make sure to book any accommodation or train tickets well in advance, as prices are guaranteed to go up in December.
