The University of Worcester
Moving into our comfortable Worcester student accommodation, you’ll be heading to study at The University of Worcester. It is one of the most inclusive higher education institutions in the UK, with over 10,000 students studying at the University each year. The long-term employment potential for students of the university is very strong, with the University of Worcester ranked in the top 10 of universities for sustained employment. The courses that are offered cover a wide range of professional topics, with the aim for fantastic student support at every turn, and an inclusive approach that can be felt by all students. This is no more evident that at the pretty City Campus 48, which is located right in the centre of the city and has loads of calm study spaces, a gym, a cafe, and top-class facilities throughout.
The Hive
The Hive is an interesting addition to the university, as it is the first joint university and public library in the whole of the UK. Students have access to over 250,000 books, and due to the integration as a university and public library there are 12-miles of collections in archive. On top of that day-to-day function, The Hive is also home to a wide programme of lectures, performance events, exhibitions, as well as volunteering and placement opportunities.
First Point
A focus on future employability at the University of Worcester means that there is a real focus on helping students to build an effective CV, but to also build real-life skills that will assist in a future career. The careers service is called First Point, and this is where you should go to find advice, guidance, and job postings. There are plenty of part-time opportunities within the university, in local sports clubs and schools, charity volunteering opportunities, and within companies in the local area. Alongside this practical assistance, the Careers Advice department is also running to a consistently high level, with advice and guidance on offer to students throughout their time living at our Worcester student accommodation. There are workshops and talks, careers booklets and information available in digital format, and events and conferences where potential employers come in to talk to students.
The Garage
There are a few different reasons why the University of Worcester is highly regarded. The Garage is an old industrial building that has been refitted to house art studios, workshops, performance space, and lecture areas, and is also the part of the campus where there are print presses, a research room and a space for large projects. Fascinatingly, the university is also the location where all pollen forecasts for the country originate – at The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit within the University.
Best Places To Eat
Moving to a new city is a difficult thing to do for anyone. When you first move into your new student accommodation in Worcester, you’ll want to get to know your new flatmates and friends better, and one way to do so is to bond through food. In such a quaint little city like Worcester there are loads of pretty cafes and fine restaurants to choose from. Here, we look at a few of the best places to eat out in Worcester as a student (or otherwise), but there are always more to discover on your own during your time living in the city.
The Fire Fly (Lowesmoor)
This CAMRA pub is more than just a feast for fans of real ale, it is also a great place to go if you like vegan food. There is a wide and delicious Lebanese and Palestinian menu, with dishes like fattoosh, baba ganoush, and tabbouleh. The decor and furnishings are interesting to say the least, with a range of taxidermy on the walls! The pub is a warren of different rooms over different floors, and makes for a quirky experience. You can also get large portions for the burgers on offer, but the prices are great.
Francini Cafe de Colombia (Angel Pl.)
This fantastic little cafe is in the perfect location for students, as it is located right next to the university and serves up great coffee in an authentic Colombian cafe setting. The service is very friendly, if a little relaxed, but this all adds to the ambience and it is definitely a lovely retreat during a busy day of uni work. The food is the perfect size and type for a small lunchtime break, and it is like setting foot in a different country.
The King’s Head (Sidbury)
Sometimes, all you want is a big hearty feed in a big old British pub. Pub grub at its best is extremely simple, good value and fills that missing piece of your day. This modern bar and grill has an extensive menu of pub grub that is suitable for all palate’s, and fills you up in the most satisfying way.
Commandery Coffee (The Commandery)
Located in one of the oldest and most striking buildings in Worcester (which has been a medieval hospital, the Royalist Headquarters during the English Civil War, and a school for the blind during Victorian times), Commandery Coffee serves up delicious cups of coffee, a selection of teas and cake, and a beautiful garden to sit with your cuppa alongside the canal and watch the world go by for a part of your day.
Cafe Afloat (Diglis Road)
This amazing cafe that is run out of a barge on the canal has been around for a few years now. The service is always very friendly, and the spot along the canal where it sits is a delightful place to stop and grab a bite to eat whether you are looking for a breakfast dish or a spot of lunch.
The Anchor (Diglis Basin)
This pub has a well-deserved reputation as serving up one of the best Sunday Roasts in Worcester, with amazing views to take in over Diglis Basin Marina, just to the South of the city centre.
Bodega (Foregate Street)
Not far from our student accommodation in Worcester, Bodega is the perfect place to have an authentic flavour of South American cuisine. Right next to Foregate Street Railway Station in the centre of the city, Bodega is also a popular haunt for those after a cocktail evening.
Have A Good Night Out
We all love a big night out, and when you first move into your new Worcester student accommodation, you’ll notice how close you are to some of the best student nights out in town. There are quite a few different student-specific nights out, as well as student-friendly bars and clubs that the locals also frequent. In a small city like Worcester, you’ll be glad to hear that it is a very friendly town, welcoming students from all over the UK and abroad.
The Hangar (SU – St. John’s Campus)
The Hangar is the Students’ Union at the University of Worcester and there is always a really busy programme of events and activities going on. It is the place to be if you want to take part in the regular Comedy nights, Quiz Nights, and other type of fundraising events. Friday night is always karaoke night, and behind the bar is all the favourite student drinks, like VKs, alcoholic slush puppies and cocktails.
The Firefly (Lowesmoor)
As well as being a great place for good food, The Firefly is also a really good place to go for live music and regular DJ sets. It might be a little bit outside of the city centre, but it is well worth the walk (or taxi) out.
Hand in Glove (College Street)
This is a really cool, student-friendly bar that has a really comfortable ambience and is a nice place to hang out with a group of friends and listen to alternative music.
Tramps (Angel Place)
This is one of the biggest student nights in town, with the nightclub that is the largest venue in the whole of Worcester. The building is a grand part of town, it used to be the Town Hall. There are five dance floors and six bars, and is open every single night of the week.
The Oil Basin (Copenhagen Street)
This Brewhouse is one of the best pubs in the whole of Worcester, with the triple-skull Wintrip Brew Co logo fluttering on a flag out front to mark its territory. It definitely has a bohemian-inspired aesthetic, and is the perfect place for anyone looking for something a little bit alternative. The Oil Basin is widely known as a pub that caters for vegans, as well as those with gluten-intolerances.
Velvets (Angel Place)
This is one of the biggest student nights out in Worcester. The lounges are luxurious, the drinks and cocktails will flow, and there’s a big dancefloor to really let yourself go to a soundtrack from the 80s and 90s, big RnB classics, electro music and dancefloor anthems from the 00s, spread out over 4 rooms.
Paradiddle’s Cafe (Sidbury)
Paradiddle’s manages to bridge that gap between daytime cafe and a laid back ambience, and a lively music spot in the night. It is always involved in the local music scene, promoting local bands and putting on regular live shows – with an 85-capacity venue in the music bar (you can also buy CDs made by local artists).
The Old Rectifying House (North Parade)
This is the place to go if you are after a dance to some music that is a little bit more obscure than you’d usually find on a club night. The Old Rec is in an old building that overlooks the River Severn, with great food and drink, and extensive cocktail menu, a lounge bar and outdoor seating, with a main room that plays host to regular DJs.
Playing And Watching Sport
We all like a bit of sports, whether it’s taking part of watching, and when you are living in Worcester student accommodation there is loads to do. You are in the perfect location in your student accommodation in Worcester to take part in team sports, to go for a run, or to watch some rugby union.
County Cricket
Worcestershire Country Cricket Club is one of the traditional clubs in English cricket, having been formed way back in 1865. It is one of the 18 counties that make up the league format in England and Wales, and in the limited overs version of the game ‘The Pears’, or the Worcestershire Royals as they are officially known, play at New Road which is one of the loveliest grounds in the world on an historic riverside site.
Other Spectator Sports
There is much to love about sport in Worcester and the surrounding area. The Worcester Wolves play basketball successfully in the British Basketball League. Worcester Warriors are the local rugby union team, playing in the English Premiership, the Anglo-Welsh Cup, and have also competed in the European Rugby Cup and the Aviva A League in the past.
University Sport
There are countless sports teams and sporting events to take part in through the university, including football, rugby, hockey, athletics, and other sports. In fact, the Worcester men’s basketball team have been BUCS champions eight times, and you can compete in many different team sports to an elite level, competing against other universities and colleges nationwide. The Arena is huge, capable of holding up to 2,000 spectators and designed for people with disabilities to both compete and spectate. It has a wide and varied programme of live sporting events.
Horse Racing
A tree-lined track that is one of the oldest racecourses in Britain, Worcester racecourse is positioned along the banks of the River Severn. As with many other sporting arenas and attractions in Worcester, the course is beautiful and well-loved.
Water Events
There is a real sense of nostalgia for all things sailing at the University, and you’ll find one of the biggest Dragon Boat Clubs in England based in Worcester. Alongside that there is a huge provision for rowing, sculling and sailing, with crews entered for the Henley Royal Regatta amongst other things, with a great record and reputation.
The Beautiful Countryside
Throughout Worcester, along the River Severn, the canal, and the surrounding countryside, there are plenty of hiking trails, cycling and running opportunities, and loads of green space with fresh air for you to explore when away from your student accommodation in Worcester.
The Best Places To Go Shopping
Worcester is a delightful small city to explore and get some shopping done. You’ll be glad to know that once you first move into your new Worcester accommodation there are all the brand name and high street stores that you know and love, as well as plenty of supermarkets to help fill your spacious cupboards and get ready for living.
Shopping Centres
There are three undercover shopping areas in Worcester (CrownGate, Cathedral Plaza and Reindeer Court). Here, you’ll find the big high street names, such as Primark, New Look, Boots, House of Fraser, Debenhams, and much more. It is certainly a pretty town to walk around, taking in the myriad shopping opportunities and stopping for a cuppa and a bite to eat along the way.
Markets
A good way to gauge how a new city really works is to take a look at the local markets. Every Wednesday through Saturday you’ll find a thriving market in Angel Place where you can get to know all about the local produce. In the local area you’ll also find plenty of farmers’ markets that run on a monthly basis.
Independent & Vintage Shopping
As you would expect from a beautiful little city like Worcester, there are loads of independent stores, quirky boutiques and vintage stores to get lost in for a few hours at a time. The old Tudor buildings certainly make for a pretty setting when shopping. Whether you are looking for a small independent boutique, such as Stripes on Foregate Street, or one of the many little gift shops or independent stores in Reindeer Court, there is something for everyone. Mealcheapen Street is where to look for second-hand vintage gems, whether you are looking for clothes, jewellery, vinyl, or anything else that takes your fancy.
Yum Yum (Crown Passage)
This Asian grocer is a favourite with locals as it stocks a large and varied selection of fresh fruit and vegetable, vegan foodstuffs, pastes, spices, and excellent frozen foods.
Birmingham
If you do fancy venturing further afield from your student accommodation in Worcester, then it is just a short train ride away to Birmingham. It is one of the largest cities in the country, and the famous Bullring is an example of fine modern shopping with all the big brand names and countless stores, restaurants, and cafes to explore on a day out away from Worcester for a change.

Worcester Christmas Fayre
The Victorian Fayre begins in early December and is absolutely stunning. The streets are filled with stalls selling all manner of produce, trinkets, gifts, and tasty food, as well as mulled wine to get the party started. It is always very busy, and a great atmosphere no matter what time of day you go.
Shindig
This university-run festival takes place over 50 venues and promoter groups. with loads of live acts playing. It is an event that brings together the local community and the student population and provides a springboard for many students interested in the industry to work alongside professional touring and events companies, as well as artists, marketing professionals, and how to run different aspects of live events on the night.
Live Music
There are loads of great smaller venues around Worcester that are great for live music and to support local bands. Heroes is one of the most popular venues in the city, with a lively alternative dancefloor, live DJs, bands, and a soundtrack that features punk, northern soul, rock music, hip-hop, and whatever else gets the crowd dancing. Huntingdon Hall, The Marrs Bar, and Huntingdon Hall are other live music venues worth checking out.
Worcester Cathedral
The cathedral is a magnificent sight throughout the city, rising above the River Severn. It holds many events over the course of the year, including plays, lectures, concerts, plays a big part in festivals and hosting exhibitions. It is a central part of life in Worcester and is easily reached from your Worcester student accommodation.
Tudor House
This fine building on Friar Street as stood for over five centuries, and has been used in various formats, such as clothes-makers, weavers, bakers, brewers, painters, amongst many other professions. Over time it has been Cadbury’s Tudor Coffee House, a school clinic and a museum.
