Student Satisfaction

The University of Lincoln has a long and historic tradition of high standards of teaching, with roots going back to the Hull College of Art in 1861. It was the first new city-centre campus built in the UK for many decades when the first building at the Brayford Pool campus was opened in 1996 by Her Majesty the Queen, and it was a dramatic development that has improved standards for the university and the city as a whole.

The modern learning environment has added new buildings over the years and is currently ranked within the top 10 universities in the UK for student satisfaction. It is just a short walk from our Lincoln student accommodation, whichever property you choose to live in.

The Gold Standard

These high levels of student satisfaction are underpinned by inspirational and innovative teaching. On top of that there are high-quality teaching facilities located within a beautiful, historic city to make for a serene and motivating student experience. The university has also been awarded Gold in the UK’s national Teaching Excellence Framework, as one of only 59 higher education providers to receive the highest possible accolade out of almost 300 that entered. At the Great Central Warehouse Library students have access to nearly 250,000 books and e-books, as well as over 200,000 print and electronic journals and specialist collections.

World-class facilities throughout the university and Students’ Union are geared towards helping students achieve whatever they desire, with help available to find part-time jobs whilst they study, or work experience positions through the Student Job Shop. You’ll also find specialist assistance within each department – so for instance students of science and engineering have an engineering hub and specialist laboratories for research purposes, Health and Social Care students, alongside Psychology students have access to sleep laboratories, clinical suites and a specialist BabyLab to study child development, and students of the Arts can utilise studios and workshops with 3D printers, laser cutting resources and video and audio editing suites.

The Students’ Union

The Students’ Union offers over 100 clubs, societies and sports to explore, and there are over 3,500 students involved each year. If you are interested in volunteering there is an extensive network in the local area, including Lincoln Fire and Rescue Training, and support services for victims of domestic abuse. In 2019, a collaboration between the University of Lincoln and the University of Nottingham saw a new medical school open, based in Lincoln. It is an exciting development, which adds to the potential for students living in the city.

Bishop Grosseteste University

Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is recognised for its high employability over a consistent period of time, as well as Gold TEF award notes praising its student satisfaction rates. Set in the heart of Lincoln, the campus has been established for over 150 years, and is named after Bishop Robert Grosseteste, a 13th-century Bishop of Lincoln. The foundations of the main building include air-raid shelters from the Second World War, as well as archaeology from both the medieval and Roman periods.

The Student Union

The Student Union is an independent registered charity, and although small when compared with the University of Lincoln SU, it has established a wide range of interesting clubs and societies for students to take part in, including poker, psychology, and performing arts. Students can also explore various sports clubs to take part at a local or national level.

There is also Lincoln College, which features business-led, career-focused courses.

The Best Food Offers

You’ll want to know where to find some of the best food offers in town when moving to our Lincoln student accommodation, and luckily for you this small city is easily traversed on foot or bike, with plenty of public transport options. What this means is that whatever type of cuisine you would like to try, you’re not that far away from something tasty.

Central Market

As a student you have to make sure that you are looking after your health, and it is important to eat as much fresh fruit and veg as you can. Central Market on Sincil Street is a great place to buy produce from local, independent suppliers. You can also stock up on a good selection of meat, fruit, and veg, without breaking the student bank. A regular farmers’ market on Castle Hill is also a great place to investigate.

Steep Hill is well worth the climb as a new student in Lincoln. It may take you some time to get used to, but there are some delightful treats waiting for you along the way. One such treat is Browns Pie Shop just a short walk from Lincoln Cathedral. It is located within a stunning 17th-century building, which was the former lodgings of T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and is thought to be home to a couple of ghosts! The modern-day restaurant is anything but scary, however, offering speciality pot pies and a wide variety of gravy and filling options.

From Irish stout gravy to beef and root vegetables, wild rabbit and leeks, to slow-roasted pork belly and mustard mash, we can hear you salivating already. Bunty’s Tea Room is another popular place on Steep Hill. A vintage, family-run tea room in a Grade II listed building, Bunty’s offers a wide range of teas, as well as delightful light bites and snacks, making it the perfect lunchtime stop-off to recharge for the afternoon of work and study.

The Finest Restaurants

In the heart of the city centre and one of the finest restaurants around is Olé Olé, a Spanish bar and restaurant that is very popular with locals, students, and tourists alike. There are many delicious dishes on offer, from bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with lentils, almonds, ham and chorizo, to big, hearty dishes such as paella. With a jug of sangria to accompany your meal you’ll leave full and happy.

Alice in Wonderland

Other great places to relax and enjoy a quick bite during the day include the wonderfully named Curiositea at the Bishop Grosseteste University campus, which has an Alice in Wonderland theme, Refectory in the same location, and Zing Café Bar, offering cakes, coffee, and sandwiches from the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre. For something a little different, head out to the western outskirts of the city (just a short drive or bike ride away) and enjoy some stunning ice cream from Daisy Made farm – the perfect summer treat.

Student Night Out

The nightlife is pretty good for students in Lincoln, and your accommodation leaves you close by meaning you can arrive stylishly late and get home quickly and safely after a night out. Let’s look at a few of the pubs, bars, and clubs that are student-friendly in the city, all within walking distance of each other.

The Barge Cocktail Bar is an exciting floating bar located on the Brayford Pool. Here, you can drink artisan cocktails, craft beer, and a wide range of other drinks in style. The Swan is another great waterside haunt for food and drink and a favourite with university students and staff on the University of Lincoln campus.

Close by are the Tower Bars, situated in an impressive glass building on the Brayford Waterfront. Within the boundaries of the University campus there is plenty of entertainment on offer for students here. The Engine Shed Club is a former engine shed (surprisingly!) and is the largest capacity club room in the whole of Lincoln. Based on the campus there are regular student club nights to enjoy.

Fever & Boutique

Two other exciting venues for students to explore at night include Fever & Boutique, which is a twin scene bar and nightclub on the High Street. There are two rooms, two DJs, and always a massive party going on in both rooms. At Home there are even more rooms to explore (6 rooms, 8 bars, and a roof terrace), with different music, great food, and fantastic service.

Plenty of Action

At the Engine Shed the Students’ Union hosts Quack on a Wednesday night, providing you with the cheesiest night of music you can imagine. This is also home to many a great society and club night out, with different themes each week to dress up and play games too. Superbull @ Moka & Shack is two floors of music ranging from the chart, funky, and house music on the top floor to Afrobeats, Hip-Hop, and RnB on the bottom floor. This Friday night special is a great chance to get a selfie with the Bull and put a marker down as a great Lincoln student. Indie rock ‘n’ rollers should head down to Propaganda on a Saturday night to hear all the alternative floor fillers that you know and love.

Plenty To Do

There is something for everyone, with student club nights, drinks offers, and promotions on offer on campus and in Lincoln city centre on six nights of the week. Take your pick and you’ll find what you love, make new friends and enjoy your time in the city with a healthy balance between work and play.

Steep Hill

Lincoln is a city that is relatively easy to explore on foot or on bike, and with Steep Hill earning its name, walking around town is a great way to maintain a minimal level of fitness just by going about your everyday life. If you’d like to take up cycling to get around you can hire a bike from one of the many orange bike points that are located at various places around the city (including one on the Brayford Waterfront near the University).

Beautiful City Parks

If you would like to take up walking, hiking, or jogging, there are a few beautiful city parks to explore on your days off. The Arboretum is easy to access just off Monks Road and is walkable from the city centre, whilst Hartsholme Park is just west of the city centre and Whisby Nature Park a little further afield. The surrounding countryside makes Lincoln a great starting point for many beautiful hiking trails and cycling routes.

Football

For those of you that are fans of football Lincoln City has gone through a dramatic resurgence in recent years, with The Imps playing in League One in the English Football League (EFL). You can’t really claim to have lived a proper life in Lincoln if you haven’t gone to Sincil Bank to watch a match can you?

Fun For Everyone

If you would like to pursue sporting activities on an individual basis or as part of a team, for fun, to keep fit, or to compete at the highest level you can. The University of Lincoln has specialist sports facilities to help you reach your goal.

The University Sports Centre is located on the Brayford Campus and is open to all students, alumni, and staff. There are two 3G 5-a-side football pitches, a full size hockey pitch with a synthetic sand base, a badminton court, dance studio, sauna and fitness suite, tennis courts, and ever-expanding functional training spaces to allow an extensive range of fitness classes and team sports. As there are over 130 sports clubs and societies at the university it is important that the facilities continue to improve year on year to meet the needs of all involved.

A University of Lincoln Sports Scholarship is available to talented sports people, allowing students to continue sporting development towards an elite level alongside regular study, with up to 10 students receiving £10,000 each year. This approach is aimed at helping improve and maintain consistently high standards from students at every level of expertise.

Destination Shop

The nearest big town or city to Lincoln is around forty miles away, which has meant that Lincoln has had no choice but to develop an array of interesting and quirky independent stores of all shapes and sizes, alongside big shopping centres and high street brand names. In fact, Lincoln is regarded as being one of the most important shopping destinations in the East Midlands and within the top 50 in the UK.

High Street Brands

You’ll find all of your favourite high street brands, on the high street and within the two modern shopping centres, as well as some fantastic indoor markets and plenty of chain restaurants and bars to eat and drink. On the flip side you’ve also got a whole host of great independent retailers (over 200 local stores and boutiques in total in the city centre), making for an exciting retail experience. There are plenty of shops and stores with student discounts and promotions, and those places where you can find more bang for your buck. The beauty of shopping in Lincoln is that all of these shops and centres are found in a beautiful setting where the Romans once sat and enjoyed the town around 2,000 years ago.

Britain’s Best Street

The Cathedral Quarter includes Bailgate Shopping where there are plenty of independent boutiques and shops lining the exquisite cobbled streets. From arts and crafts stores to plenty of specialities, tea rooms and restaurants to explore, you’ll have a great time in this part of town. Steep Hill (voted ‘Britain’s Best Street) and the Strait are both worth a visit, with plenty of retro, antique, and vintage stores to explore and rummage around for hidden gems, the Cheese Society deli and Goodies traditional sweet shop are important finds at The Strait.

Shopping Centres

Waterside Shopping Centre and St Marks Shopping Centre both provide much-loved high street names and big brands, an important part of student life as you come to terms with living independently, as it is important to have familiar home comforts at first in your Lincoln student accommodation. At the Cornhill Quarter expect to find some unique independent businesses and the wonderful Lincoln Central Market. There are different pop-up street markets at various times throughout the year, so keep an eye out and you could find some great local produce, local art, trinkets, crafts, and clothing to suit your needs.

Majestic Views

From your home at our Lincoln student accommodation you are living in a brilliant spot to make the most of all the events and attractions that this lovely city has to offer. We’ve mentioned the trek up Steep Hill before in terms of seeing plenty of great shops and cafes and restaurants to enjoy, but it is also a trek worth making as at the top you get a majestic view of Lincoln Cathedral (the 3rd largest cathedral in the UK) – students have free entry. Lincoln Castle is then located the other side of the square and is a must-see attraction during your time living in Lincoln and is free for students to enter on non-event days.

Art and Culture

For art and culture there is plenty on offer in this city, with The Collection and Usher Gallery easily found on Danes Terrace, where you can view a combination of decorative arts and marvellous archaeological artefacts. At The Usher Gallery you can even take part in life-drawing classes each Wednesday, to try out your creative side. The Mansions of the Future project and the Museum of Lincolnshire Life are both interesting sites to visit.

Asylum Steampunk Festival

For the biggest city in the area, you can be sure to experience some wonderful events throughout the year in Lincoln. One of these is the Asylum Steampunk Festival, which is the longest-running and largest festival in the world dedicated to all things Steampunk. The historic cobbled streets are taken over by the Victorian Steampunk Society over the August Bank Holiday Weekend and it is truly a sight to behold.

Live Music

The Autumn Festival is a celebration of all things Lincolnshire, with food and drink events involving local suppliers, forestry demonstrations, live music, and cookery and craft demonstrations on the Stourton Estate to the east of Lincoln.

For literary freaks, the Lincoln Book Festival hosts acclaimed authors and fascinating talks from some of the best-known historical fiction and fiction writers. There are plenty of other smaller festivals spread throughout the year celebrating all sorts of things, so whatever your interests and hobbies, you are bound to find an event or festival that you’ll enjoy when living at our student accommodation in Lincoln.
