What is a Studio Apartment?
A studio is a self-contained living space where your bedroom, kitchenette, and living area are all in one room, accompanied by a private en-suite bathroom. In general, this is the best of our room types for students who value independence.
Typically, studios are chosen by those who want more peace and privacy than their peers. Because you don’t share a kitchen, you have more control over your environment and lifestyle. This can be of particular benefit to postgraduates or mature students who want a more ‘grown up’ experience.
While these rooms usually come at a higher price point, the benefit of having your own dedicated space to cook and relax is a significant draw for many.
What is an En-Suite Room?
An en-suite room strikes the ideal balance between independent and social living. You will still have your own private en-suite bathroom and bedroom, but will usually share a communal kitchen and lounge space with a group of flatmates (often ranging from between 4 and 8).
This room type is the most common for undergraduates because it allows you to retreat to your own space while still being a part of a ‘household’. Choosing an en-suite is a great way to meet new people and experience the community aspects of university life without sharing a bathroom. If you enjoy socialising while cooking but want your own space to relax, an en-suite is the room for you.
What is a Shared Room or Flat?
Shared accommodation usually refers to an arrangement where you still have a private bedroom but share both the bathroom and kitchen facilities. In some cases, shared could refer to a twin room where two students share the bedroom itself, though this is less common in modern buildings.
Shared options are generally the most cost-effective ways to live. They are excellent for students who are rarely in their rooms and prefer to spend their time exploring the city or socialising in shared spaces. Choosing this option does not usually diminish the security and facilities offered by your student accommodation provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are bills included in all room types?
At Homes for Students, all utility bills* (water, electricity, and gas) are included in the rental price of all room types. This makes budgeting much simpler as you don’t need to think about bills or rising costs throughout the year.
Can I choose who I live with in an en-suite flat?
It depends. If you book as a group, we’ll always do our best to place you in the same flat. Booking alone, you’ll likely live with a group of new people.
