Your Guide to Finding a GP in Liverpool
Unpacking at Paddington Park House or Glassworks brings its own small mountain of admin, whether that’s finding the nearest shop, working out the quickest route to lectures, or figuring out whose turn it is to buy bin bags.
Registering with a GP tends to fall to the bottom of that pile, and it usually stays there until you catch a cold and realise you have nowhere to turn. Liverpool makes this one easier to tick off early. Most University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University students end up with the same practice, Brownlow Health, which has sites across the city rather than just one.

How do I register with a GP in Liverpool?
Most students register with Brownlow Health, which has three sites to choose from. One on the University of Liverpool campus itself (Peach Street, L69 7ZL), one in the city centre (26 Argyle Street, L1 5DL), and one closer to Paddington Village (70 Pembroke Place, L69 3GF). All three answer the same number, 0151 285 4578. You can register online through the NHS website or Brownlow Health’s own site, and nobody asks for proof of address, ID, immigration status or an NHS number to do it.
GP registration still depends on catchment areas, so check before you commit to one. The NHS website has a postcode checker for exactly this, and if you fall outside the area, it will point you to other practices nearby instead.
What’s the deal with dentists?
An NHS dentist appointment in Liverpool can take a while to secure, so find one before your teeth give you a reason to rush. The NHS website’s find a dentist tool shows which local practices still have room for new patients.
If a dental problem turns up before you have sorted any of this, you are not stuck. The Cheshire and Merseyside Urgent Dental Care helpline, 0161 476 9651, and NHS 111 both take calls from anyone, registered or not. That covers severe toothache, painkillers will not shift, an abscess, a tooth that is broken or knocked out, heavy bleeding, or a mouth ulcer that has not healed in three weeks.
Where’s my nearest pharmacy, and what can it do?
Find yours through the NHS website’s pharmacy finder. A pharmacy is worth more than a quick prescription pickup. Under NHS Pharmacy First, a pharmacist can treat several common conditions without a GP appointment. If your illness falls outside of those brackets, the pharmacist will still talk it through with you and refer you to a GP if it needs looking at.
What if something happens before I’ve sorted this?
For anything that will not wait but is not a 999 situation, NHS 111 (or 111.nhs.uk) is open around the clock. For anything life-threatening, Royal Liverpool University Hospital on Prescot Street, L7 8XP, has an emergency department.
Helpful Tips
- Do this in week one, while you feel fine. Registering for the first time mid-illness is a worse version of the same job.
- Save both numbers now: Brownlow Health on 0151 285 4578, the dental helpline on 0161 476 9651.
- On regular medication? Sort a top-up before term starts. Moving a prescription across to a new GP is not instant.
