The best alternative Sheffield music venues
Let’s get straight into the action with the all-timer, the place where you can truly belong as a music-lover in Sheffield.
The Leadmill
Leadmill Road. S1 4SE
This is the one. The staple of the Sheffield music scene. Since 1980, every successful band that you can think of has come through the doors. It’s the longest-running live music venue and nightclub in the city. It’s a former flour mill-turned community centre- turned music venue, so it has the feel of community from decades past. The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, Pulp, and Arctic Monkeys have all played here before moving on to the world stage. There’s even a secondary stage and space for club nights, live theatre, comedy, and film screenings.
*Unfortunately, after 45 years, the owners were evicted earlier in 2025, but the new owners hope to reopen it as ‘Electric Sheffield’ in 2026. Fingers crossed that it remains a relevant part of the Sheffield music scene and doesn’t lose its appeal.
Record Junkee
Earl Street. S1 3FP
It’s more than just a cool independent live music venue; Record Junkee is a 150-cap venue, bar, and record store. It’s a hotspot for vinyl junkies looking for the latest releases on record or those hidden gems and classics from the past. Its ethos is one of fierce independence and inclusivity, a warm and welcoming place for those outside of the mainstream in the city. A place that is ‘run by the fans, for the fans’.
Corporation
Milton Street. S1 4JU
Voted by Kerrang! as one of the top 3 rock clubs in the UK, Corp, as it is affectionately known by locals, has been around since the last century, and in its 25+ years has grown to become the go-to music joint for lovers of rock and alternative music. It’s a place where you can sit back and relax with a beer in the corner or get right into the middle of it all, dancing with attitude and jumping headfirst into the mosh pit.

Yellow Arch Studios
Burton Road. S3 8BX
Set in a Victorian-era factory that has been regenerated for the sake of art, Yellow Arch Studios is a vibe. It’s a recording studio and performance space, the birthplace of Arctic Monkeys, but it has become a full-time live music venue since 2015 and has gone from strength to strength. If you’re a creative in Sheffield, this is the place for you to find your tribe and get things made. Grab a pint, watch a film, make art, listen to good tunes, and see live acts, all under one roof.
The Washington
Fitzwilliam Street. S1 4JP
The Washington is a true institution in Sheffield. Students, locals, music-heads, it’s been an alternative bastion for decades. It’s a good old-fashioned pub, but it’s open late (it has a 3 am license), always has great alternative tunes playing and is the end-of-the-night location for anyone in the city who’s either been at or played a gig. It’s where you can get a feel for the music community for sure. It even holds small gigs for the next wave of young, local, up-and-coming bands, looking to cut their teeth before heading to the small independent venues we’ve already listed.
Network
Matilda Street. S1 4QD
For the best beats, trance, DnB, techno, and house, Network is the place to be in Sheffield. It’s a live music venue with great club nights throughout the week, in the heart of the city centre. You’ll also find an eclectic range of music over the course of the week, the best of dance, but also some of those dance-infused indie and alternative classics to keep you moving.
Sidney & Matilda
Sidney Street. S1 4RH
Set in the very heart of the creative quarter in Sheffield, Sidney & Matilda brings the vibes of Brooklyn to the Steel City. There’s a warehouse, a cool basement, and a courtyard, a cool overall venue where you can chill out with a beer or head in to see bands and live acts. It’s taken a previously abandoned industrial district and transformed it into an exciting and creative hub for the alternative crowd and students alike.
